Students of CND and Department of Home Science visited Mid-Day Meal Unit

Under the patronage of Dr. Meenakshi Duggal, Principal of RR Bawa DAV College for Girls, a team of 26 students from B.Sc. Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (Semesters IV and VI) and B.A. Home Science (Semester VI) conducted an educational visit to Government Middle School Talwandi Chungla to observe the functioning of the Mid-Day Meal Programme. The visit was organized with the support of NSS Coordinator Mr. Pankaj Kumar and Mrs. Sunaina Gupta (Department of Home Science).

The objective of the visit was to understand the working of the Mid-Day Meal Programme, with particular focus on food storage practices, preparation methods, serving procedures, hygiene standards, and overall service consistency. The team closely examined adherence to prescribed nutritional norms, cleanliness of the cooking area, and the absence of any form of social discrimination during meal distribution.

As part of the outreach initiative, students actively engaged with schoolchildren through interactive and informative sessions on health and nutrition. Devnoor Kaur (B.A. Home Science) delivered a talk on the importance of a balanced diet. Navneet Kaur (B.Sc. CN&D) highlighted the harmful effects of junk food consumption, while Japleen Kaur (B.Sc. CN&D) used flashcards to explain healthy eating habits among schoolchildren. Jashan Preet Kaur (B.Sc. CN&D) demonstrated the concept of various food groups through a food pyramid model. Harpreet Kaur (B.Sc. CN&D) further reinforced key messages by conducting an engaging board game activity centered on health and nutrition awareness.

Appreciating the initiative, Officiating Principal Dr. Meenakshi Duggal emphasized that such experiential learning programmes not only enhance students’ academic understanding but also foster community engagement and social responsibility. She noted that field-based exposure plays a crucial role in preparing students to address real-world nutritional and public health challenges effectively.
